ZAMBIA

Zambia, a butterfly-shaped country in the tropical belt of Southern Africa, is known for its massive rivers and famous waterfalls, including Victoria Falls. It is one of the last really wild, untamed wildernesses in Africa. From the air, one of the most remarkable experiences is witnessing its remote unmapped forests, etched only by the imprints of ancient elephant trails.

But it is most keenly a land of big water, and Zambian safaris begin and end on the banks of the Zambezi and Kafue rivers. These stretch and wind through some of the lesser-known parks of Africa, including the North and South Luangwa and Kafue National Parks. All are teeming with wildlife, with views from some of our favorite riverfront lodges out over the elephants trundling through the marshes, crocodiles drooping from the banks, and prolific birdlife buzzing around islands that rise and fall with the tide.

The seasoned adventurer will find many opportunities that stretch beyond the typical safari experience and provide unique chances to interact with the natural surroundings - Imagine ranger-guided nature walks amongst the riverine forest, scenic sundowner boat cruises and canoe rides, fly camping, or even chasing the epic tiger fish. A favorite experience is also taking a boat to one of the seasonal sandbars for lunch by the water, with views of lazing hippos and elephants crossing. It is a special destination, and know that it is an adventure that will get you back to nature in a way that is truly peaceful and tranquil.
