THE STORY
THE STORY
Safari is a natural way of life for me. It is what I love and what I do best. Born and raised in Kenya to an Australian missionary family, Africa is my home. My father worked closely with various tribes in the central and northern parts of the country and thus, since the age of a small boy, I have been immersed in local tribal customs and languages. I was raised with the East African people and their culture, but it was the outdoors, amidst the African wildlife and bush, that captured my heart.
Idyllic childhood days were spent fishing, bird watching, cattle ranching and horseback riding alongside the abundant wildlife that roamed the Laikipia plains in Northern Kenya. It was an exciting classroom and an educational playground, which I probably didnβt appreciate at the time, but now recognize for the extraordinary opportunity that it was.
I finished my studies and at the age of 17 began my career in the safari world, becoming a fully licensed professional safari guide in 2002. For more than 14 years, I have guided safaris all over the continent, from Ethiopia to South Africa.
The feeling is not easily articulated but rather something you feel once you have stood 10 feet from a bull elephant or felt the vibrations of a lionβs roar in the dark while you sleep at night. The wild tests you with moments of Living that are both exhilarating and liberating.
My love for Africa coupled with my years of experience and understanding of not only this diverse continent, its cultures and its wildlife, but also of the individuals who travel to be a part of her magic, led to the founding of J.R Chipman Safaris.
We believe that a safari is not just about the landscape but the way that you interact with it and that is The Art of the Adventure. This is how we like to describe what we create. I look forward to journeying with you to witness these wild, unadulterated plains and to taste a different kind of Freedom.
